Tissue Necrosisaccording to TCM

What is Tissue Necrosis?

Tissue necrosis refers to the death of body tissues, a condition where cells in the tissue die off prematurely. This process can occur in any tissue of the body and is often due to factors like reduced blood flow, infections, toxins, or trauma. When blood flow to a tissue is compromised, it deprives the tissue of oxygen and nutrients, leading to cell death. Tissue necrosis can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly, and in severe cases, it may result in gangrene, where the dead tissue begins to decay.

How Does TCM View Tissue Necrosis?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approaches tissue necrosis from a perspective distinct from Western medicine. TCM views this condition as a result of imbalances in the body's fundamental systems, particularly Qi (vital energy), Blood, and the balance of Yin and Yang.

It emphasizes that these imbalances, such as stagnation or deficiencies, can lead to the disruption of the flow of Qi and Blood, eventually causing tissue death. TCM focuses on restoring harmony to these systems as a means to treat and prevent necrosis.

Causes of Tissue Necrosis According to TCM

In TCM, tissue necrosis is often attributed to specific patterns of disharmony within the body. A common cause is the Deficiency of Stomach Yang and the presence of Empty-Cold, where the lack of vital energy in the Stomach leads to a reduction in the nourishing and warming functions, thus affecting the tissues.

Another TCM perspective considers stagnation of Qi and Blood as a contributing factor, where the impeded flow of these vital substances results in the lack of nourishment and oxygen to the tissues, causing their decay. These patterns highlight the importance of maintaining balance and flow within the body's systems according to TCM principles.
