Flat Wartsaccording to TCM

What are Flat Warts?

Flat warts, medically known as verruca plana, are a common type of skin wart. These warts are generally small, smooth, and skin-colored, often appearing on the face, neck, or limbs. They are caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are contagious through skin contact.

Unlike other types of warts, flat warts are smoother and flatter in appearance and tend to grow in large numbers. While generally harmless, they can be a cosmetic concern and may occasionally cause mild discomfort.

How Does TCM View Flat Warts?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), flat warts are viewed through the lens of bodily imbalances and the flow of Qi (vital energy) and Blood. TCM suggests that these skin manifestations are a result of internal disharmonies, such as the accumulation of Dampness and Heat within the body.

Unlike Western medicine, which focuses on the viral cause, TCM emphasizes correcting the underlying imbalances through holistic treatment approaches to alleviate the symptoms and prevent recurrence.

Causes of Flat Warts According to TCM

TCM attributes the formation of flat warts to specific internal imbalances. One common pattern identified in TCM is the stagnation and accumulation of Dampness and Heat in the body. This can lead to the manifestation of warts as the body fails to maintain a harmonious flow of Qi and Blood.

Another contributing factor could be a Deficiency in the body’s Defensive Qi, weakening the skin's natural barrier against external pathogens. Understanding these patterns helps TCM practitioners develop tailored treatments that address the root cause of the condition.

TCM Herbs for Flat Warts

To treat flat warts, TCM often employs herbs that can help balance the body’s internal environment. Herbs that drain Dampness, such as Job's tears (Yi Yi Ren), are commonly used. This herb is known for its sweet and cool properties and targets the Lung, Spleen, and Stomach, helping to remove Dampness and clear Heat from the body. By addressing these underlying imbalances, TCM aims to not only treat the visible symptoms of flat warts but also strengthen the body's natural defenses to prevent future occurrences. The selection of herbs is based on a comprehensive TCM diagnosis, ensuring a personalized treatment approach.
