Commentary

Weishang EX-CA is not a major Extra point. Its main function is to benefit the abdomen.

Classical Sources

Weishang (胃上) is a lesser-known extra point not extensively documented in major classical texts. It appears in modern compilations of extra points used for digestive disorders. The point name literally means "Above the Stomach" (胃上), reflecting its location and therapeutic focus on elevating prolapsed stomach conditions. It is also recorded under the alternative name "Lift the Sunken Point" (提垂穴), emphasizing its function of raising descended organs and supporting Middle Jiao Qi.

How to Locate

The distance between the sternocostal angle and the center of the umbilicus is 8 cun. Xiawan REN-10 is 2 cun superior to the umbilicus on the midline. Locate Weishang EX-CA 4 cun lateral to REN-10.

Caution

This point is located in the abdominal region with proximity to the peritoneum. Deep needling should be avoided to prevent puncturing the peritoneal cavity. Use oblique or subcutaneous needling technique directed toward the umbilicus or Tianshu ST-25 as traditionally recommended. Exercise additional caution in patients who are pregnant, have abdominal distention, or have thin abdominal walls. The point is not among the major standardized extra points recognized by WHO (1989), but has clinical utility for gastroptosis and related conditions.
