Commentary

Zhongchong P-9's main function is to clear various Heat, regardless being Exterior or Interior Heat.

In acute situation, the Exterior Heat penetrates the Defensive Qi and invades the Nutritive Qi Level of the Four Levels Theory. The typical symptoms are fever and loss of consciousness.

In chronic situation, the Interior Heat gives rise to mental disorders such as anxiety, agitation, palpitation and insomnia. Thus it calms the Mind.

Together with other Well points of the hand, Zhongchong P-9 is also used to expel Interior Wind and regain consciousness, especially for patients under acute Wind-stroke attack.

Classical Sources

Ling Shu (Spiritual Pivot), Chapter 'Ben Shu': First mention of Zhongchong, locating it at "the tip of the middle finger" (手中指之端也).

Zhen Jiu Jia Yi Jing (Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion): Clarifies the location as "a distance from the nail like the width of a leek leaf in the depression" (去爪甲如韭葉陷者中).

Zhen Jiu Da Cheng (Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion): Documents its use for Heat diseases, mental disorders, and loss of consciousness, establishing it as a key emergency resuscitation point.

How to Locate

Locate Zhongchong P-9 at the most distal point on the tip of the middle finger.

Caution

Located at the fingertip with dense sensory nerve endings - needling is quite painful. Typically pricked briefly to induce bleeding rather than needled with retention. Avoid deep insertion as only superficial needling (0.1 cun) is required. Ensure proper sterilization when using three-edged needle for bloodletting. Not commonly used for routine treatment due to sensitivity - primarily reserved for emergency situations.
