Lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, is a condition marked by pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow. This discomfort arises from the overuse of muscles and tendons in the forearm, leading to inflammation and micro-tears in the tendons attaching to the lateral epicondyle. Often associated with activities that require repetitive motion of the arm and wrist, lateral epicondylitis is not limited to athletes and can affect anyone who engages in such repetitive tasks.
TCM Perspective on Lateral Epicondylitis
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a unique lens through which lateral epicondylitis is viewed and addressed. In TCM, this condition is often seen as a manifestation of underlying disharmonies in the body’s Qi (vital energy) and Blood flow.
The pain and inflammation characteristic of tennis elbow are considered to be results of blockages or imbalances in these vital energies, particularly in the pathways or meridians that traverse the elbow area. TCM focuses on restoring the balance and free flow of these energies to alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
From a TCM standpoint, lateral epicondylitis can stem from several internal disharmonies. Two common patterns linked to this condition include Phlegm in the Channels joints and muscles, and Qi And Blood Stagnation. These patterns highlight the concept that physical symptoms in TCM are interrelated with internal energy flows.
Phlegm accumulation, for instance, can lead to obstructions in the meridians causing pain and stiffness, while Qi And Blood Stagnation points to impeded energy and nutrient flow, resulting in pain and reduced mobility.
