Illness mononucleosis, commonly known as mononucleosis or "mono," is a viral infection often caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. Characterized by symptoms such as extreme fatigue, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and occasionally, an enlarged spleen, this condition predominantly affects teenagers and young adults.
Though typically self-limiting, mono can lead to prolonged lethargy and discomfort. Due to its transmission through saliva, it's sometimes referred to as the "kissing disease."
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approaches illness mononucleosis by focusing on the underlying imbalances and disharmonies within the body's system. Unlike Western medicine, which targets the virus specifically, TCM seeks to understand and treat the patterns of disharmony that the illness represents.
These patterns could be an imbalance in Yin and Yang, disruptions in Qi (vital energy), or disturbances in the harmony between internal organ systems. TCM emphasizes restoring balance and strengthening the body's natural defenses to fight the illness.
