Medial Epicondylitisaccording to TCM

What is Medial Epicondylitis?

Medial epicondylitis, commonly known as golfer's elbow, epitrochleitis, or simply inner elbow pain, is a medical condition characterized by pain and inflammation in the tendons that connect the forearm to the inside of the elbow.

It's often caused by repetitive wrist and arm motions which strain the muscles and tendons, leading to pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow. This condition is not limited to athletes and can affect anyone engaging in activities that exert the relevant muscles.

TCM Perspective on Medial Epicondylitis

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), medial epicondylitis is viewed through the prism of energy flow and balance within the body. TCM considers this condition as a manifestation of underlying imbalances or blockages in Qi (vital energy) and Blood circulation.

The pain and inflammation are seen as results of these blockages in the meridians that run through the elbow. TCM therapies focus on restoring the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, thereby alleviating pain and promoting healing.

TCM Causes of Medial Epicondylitis

In TCM, medial epicondylitis may be attributed to a variety of internal imbalances. Two primary patterns often associated with this condition include Phlegm in the Channels joints and muscles and Qi And Blood Stagnation.

Phlegm accumulation leads to obstructions in the channels, causing pain and stiffness. On the other hand, Qi And Blood Stagnation refers to the impeded flow of energy and nutrients, resulting in pain, swelling, and mobility issues. These patterns reflect the TCM understanding that physical symptoms are interconnected with the body’s internal energetic landscape.
