Bronchiectasis according to Chinese Medicine

What is bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis is an abnormal widening of one or more airways. Normally, tiny glands in the lining of the airways make a small amount of mucus. Mucus keeps the airways moist and traps any dust and dirt in the inhaled air. Because bronchiectasis creates an abnormal widening of the airways, extra mucus tends to form and pool in parts of the widened airways. Widened airways with extra mucus are prone to infection.

What causes bronchiectasis according to TCM?

There are 4 patterns of disharmony in our database that are associated with bronchiectasis. TCM sees our body (and mind) as a holistic system in which health issues stem from imbalances, known as "patterns of disharmony". These patterns can manifest in a wide range of symptoms and illnesses, such as bronchiectasis here.

Most of the patterns associated with bronchiectasis are "Empty" (also called "Deficient") in nature. This means that according to TCM, bronchiectasis is more likely to be a chronic condition that is due to a deficiency of certain “Vital Substances” (such as Blood or Qi), or Yin or Yang generally.

This is the case when bronchiectasis is due to "Yin Deficiency", for instance.
